Here at Brynmor we love the Welsh countryside, especially in the winter when everything is glistening with frost. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite Welsh winter walks for you and your whole family to enjoy. For extra enjoyment take along some Brynmor flapjacks for a post-walk snack.

Gwydir Forest

Located in Betws Y Coed, Gwydir Forest is home to a beautiful selection of lakes and mountains for you to wander around this winter.

Tredegar House

Tredegar House, a 17th century house situated in Newport, is surrounded by 90 acres of gardens and parkland for you and your family to explore.

Dinefwr Park

Home to some of Wales’s most elusive wildlife, Dinefwr Park is the perfect place for a family walk this winter. Make a day of it by seeing how many animals you spot.

Aber Falls

One of Wales most famous waterfalls becomes even more beautiful during the winter months. Get down there on an exceptionally chilly day to catch the falls when they’re frozen.

Cwm Idwal

Famous for its plant life and rock formations, Cwm Idwal is a dramatically scenic walk nestled within Wales’s oldest nature reserve.

As the UK emerges from lockdown, we’re all craving fun days out. Brynmor, being a Welsh flapjack, means we obviously champion things to do in North Wales, a beautiful place with lots of attractions. But what if you’ve already crossed a lot of those off? We’ve got you covered, with our list of 10 obscure, lesser known and maybe under appreciated things to do in North Wales that might take your fancy.

Of course you’ll need fuelling on these adventures, and what better way than using the energy packed into our flapjacks, perfect to throw into a bag and whip out when you feel like a treat. You can find our full Flapjack range right here on our website too, just click here.

1. Tower Hill

Location: Abergele, LL22

The Tower on Tower Hill is a grade II listed building, standing on the highest point of a hill in Abergele and hidden away past a dense forest. It’s history is not completely known, a common theory is that it was built as a watch tower against pirates. Very worthy of the hike to reach it, as you’ll be greeted with great views of the Abergele, the sea, the Clwydian range and more.

2. Alwen Reservoir Dam

Location: Cerrigydrudion, LL21 9TT

The first thing you’ll see parking up is the vast dam astride the reservoir. It was built in the early 20th century to provide water for Birkenhead, and provides great views looking down on one side, or our across the reservoir on the other side. You can follow the trail around the reservoir which is around 7 miles long, a great distance if you’re a keen runner looking for a new beautiful and interesting place to run.

3. Bounce Below

Location: Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3NB

One of the most unique things to do in North Wales, if you’ve always felt like a big kid inside. Bounce Below is the perfect experience to scratch that itch. Starting off with a huge, empty slate cavern, Zip World have suspended multiple trampolines within it to create a truly unique experience. You can jump, bounce and slide your way through this adventure to your heart’s content.

4. Gwrych Castle

Location: Abergele, LL22 8ET

Once fairly unknown, this castle was brought to national attention of the UK by being the location of the 2020 edition of the I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! television show during the Covid-19 pandemic. After many years of being left in ruins and run down, recent years have seen it be developed by local volunteers. They’ve sectioned off unsafe areas and spruced up areas as they go so you can enjoy the sights, it’s likely each time you visit there will be something new to discover!

5. The Seals at Angel Bay

Location: Penrhyn Bay, LL30 3RW

Angel Bay is famous locally for one thing, it’s seals! Angel bay features a sheltered small beach that a seal population love to call their home. If you visit around September/October you could even be lucky enough to see the seal pups during pupping season. Binoculars are a must, as at first you’ll just see lots of rocks, but when one suddenly moves, you’ve found yourself a seal! The surrounding area is also a haven for dog walkers providing beautiful views of the sea.

6. Dutch Pancake House & Conwy Water Gardens

Location: Conwy, LL32 8TP

An attraction that features multiple things to do in North Wales! A nature trail is the main sight at Conwy water gardens where you’ll be able to see the natural wildlife as well as other animals such as pheasants, otters, hens, ducks, capybaras and more all the time. If that’s not enough for you there’s also an aquatics and reptile centre featuring many different animals to look at or even take home. Still not enough? The location also features a Dutch pancake house that serves up both delicious savoury and sweet pancakes for when you get hungry, however it does close early at around 5:30pm, so always check the opening times before you visit.

7. Bodafon Farm Park

Location: Llandudno, LL30 1BW

Looking for a farm park that won’t cost the earth for you and your kids? Bodafon farm park is the clear answer located on the drive into Llandudno from the Little Orme. The park features a wide range of animals such as pigs, donkeys, horses, goats, deer, sheep, geese, ducks and many many more. The park also features the Owls Trust, a registered charity that cares for a wide range of owl species. Getting hungry? They’re famous for their homemade wood fired pizza on site, delicious!

8. Dyserth Waterfall

Location: Dyserth, LL18 6ET

Dyserth is a small village on the outskirts of Rhyl which features a beautiful 70ft waterfall. That’s not all as if you take the stairs leading up you’re treated to stunning views of Prestatyn and the sea. Walk further and you’ll find various nature trails, or just stay near the waterfall itself where you’ll find an ice cream and drinks shop.

9. Home Front Experience

Location: Llandudno, LL30 2YF

What started off as a personal collection of home front related memorabilia has turned into a full fledged museum! Although small, it is extremely dense in the amount of pieces in it’s collection. It takes you on the journey of what it was like for the people back at home during WWII. So take a few hours and really soak up all the history it has to offer.

10. Smallest House in Britain

Location: Conwy, LL32 8BE

Officially recognised by Guinness World Records, the smallest house in Great Britain is tucked away on Conwy’s quayside. Although small, it’s been painted bright red so it’s hard to miss! There are local tales that a tall fisherman used to own the home, and his feet used to poke out of the window at the top of the house when he slept at night.

It’s Official. 2021 is the year to treat yourself!

You don’t need us to tell you how strange a year 2020 was. A year with more lows than highs, there’s a lot we could say. However, instead of being negative, let’s focus on this brand new year! 2021, whilst not off to the greatest start, is a year of possibilities and exciting changes, a year where things will hopefully return to normal, and we can be reunited with the things we love most.

If 2020 taught us anything it was to concentrate on what’s important in life. Something we learnt was the importance of Self-love and Self-care. Newsflash, it’s ok to look after number one! Finding comfort in the little things is what life is all about, those small things that make us truly happy. Maybe it’s a long Sunday walk followed by a home-cooked roast dinner and a flapjack by the fire. Or perhaps it’s a catch-up with your best friend over coffee and cake!

Whatever it is, do it, and do it more often! Don’t be afraid to indulge and treat yourself!

1 x Brynmor Cranberry flapjack

360g Mincemeat

160g Unsalted Butter

Break up the Brynmor cranberry flapjack in the the bowl and mix well.

Carefully spoon the mixture into a 12-hole cupcake tray tin and use your fingers or a spoon to flatten out the edges.

Hi everyone,

I’m Lowri from North Wales, I’ve been kayaking for about 10 years and I love it. I usually do white water kayaking, where you paddle down a body of moving water, typically white water. I’ve kayaked on rivers mostly in North Wales, on sections of the Dee in Llangollen and Tryweryn white water centre in Bala.

Sometimes I travel to further a field locations such as Dartmoor and South Wales for white water kayaking. I also travelled to the alps last summer where I paddled white water for two weeks on sections of rivers including the Géronde in France and the Soča in Slovenia which was such an amazing experience. White water kayaking allows me to participate in an extreme sport and feeling that adrenaline rush whilst also enjoying and taking in the scenery in some of the most stunning parts of the world.

It can also be a team sport too.

I have also played canoe polo, regionally and for my university. Canoe polo is like water polo (rather than horse polo) except you are in a kayak of course. The sport involves wearing helmets with visors and the boats all have bumpers as it can get pretty aggressive! It’s a super fun sport as you get to play a team sport whilst also messing about in kayaks, pushing in (or “binning”) is also encouraged! Whilst at University I was the ladies team captain and even though we lost most games it was a lot of fun and that’s what counts right?

In addition to competing with polo I have competed in some flat-water racing, which involves sitting in a very skinny and tippy boat. I’ve also done a bit of slalom where you must travel down moving water as quickly as possible, whilst trying to get through numbered gates along the way. Both of these involve a lot of fitness and can be pretty technically difficult There are so many different ways to enjoy this sport. My best advice would just be to go and have a trial session and see what suits you best.

It’s really important to stay fuelled…

Kayaking can be a high adrenaline sport and I do it all year round so it’s important to stay warm by wearing the right kit and staying fuelled with the right snacks. Snacks and water are also important as kayaking is surprisingly active and I can be exhausting, I find Byrnmor flapjacks a great snack to take in the boat for a delicious and long lasting energy fix. It’s also important to wear the right safety equipment such as a helmet and buoyancy aid.

I absolutely love kayaking as it’s a fun sport and for all of the friends I have been able to make along the way. I would definitely recommend kayaking as a sport that anyone can do.

Hi everyone,

I am Victoria Mousley and I live in lovely Lancashire.

My main sport is running, and love nothing more than a day out on the trails and fells running long distances. I have had success at ultra-distance, fell running, road running, and trail running over the years and I love competing in the huge variety of races we have in the UK.

Every day I run, fitting it in wherever possible with a career as a secondary school teacher and an active 5 year old to look after. Sometimes training is a treadmill run in the late evening or a quick run at lunchtime to ensure I can get the miles in.

I also enjoy cycling- road and mountain biking and have just completed a 974 miles bike ride from Lizard Point in Cornwall to Dunnet Head in the North of Scotland and this was fuelled mainly on Brynmor flapjacks!

I was lucky enough to be introduced to these amazing flapjacks through my running and have coveted them ever since. Athletes need flapjacks! In my world it is that simple. Running, biking, hiking, you can’t beat flapjacks as fuel. They are filling, full of energy that is long lasting and they keep you going.

What is your fave Brynmor flapjack

My two favourite flavours are Cashew and Coconut and the Dark Chocolate and Ginger (although not quite as good for sunny days – living in Lancashire it isn’t too much of an issue!)

What is your favourite food?

I am a sugar addict and I love sweets and chocolate-if I ever stop running I will definitely have to lower my sweet intake. On the savoury side it is always a Spag Bol or a lasagne that I choose.

Who is your favourite sportsperson and why?

My favourite sportsperson would have to be Emelie Forsberg the Swedish Mountain and Sky runner. First and foremost she is a phenomenal athlete with a never ending stream of victories but the best thing about her is she never stops smiling. She clearly loves what she does and she smiles her way through incredibly difficult endurance events. In the sport of mountain and trail running the elites mix with everyone else and happily chat along and support one another which is how sport should be.

What film makes your cry?

Any films with animals in near tragic circumstances make me cry, I can’t help it. Lost dogs get me every time. As an English teacher, I have to say the 1994 Baz Lurhman ‘Romeo and Juliet’ makes me blub without fail. I think it’s just Leo dying actually….no Leo don’t do it! ????????

Hi everyone,

I am Jem the newest flapjack loving recruit for Brynmor. I am a middle distance (Ironman 70.3) triathlete racing across the UK and abroad, enjoying the endurance sports game, pushing my physical and mental boundaries to new levels and generally having fun in the sea on two wheels or in my trusty trainers! But this new multi-sport game was not exactly part of the ‘life plan’…

Where it all began…

From the age of 4, I trained in classical ballet-pursuing my dream of becoming a professional dancer at 19 years old. But after a scrambling out of a life-threatening illness things took a change of direction as my whole world turned on its head. I didn’t own a bike, I was petrified of water and I had never run further than 10km… but Ironman racing sparked a flame of excitement in me, and one thing is for certain: I LOVE a BIG challenge!

Three years and lots of ‘blood sweat and tears’ later and here I am, training as a full-time triathlete and working hard to be just a little bit better than yesterday as I chase the big wins against some of the best in the world.

Training for all three disciplines;

There is never a dull moment when you are playing the multi-sport game. It’s always a balance between developing each of the three disciplines (swim bike run) without being detrimental to the other. Play the game right and you have one of the feistiest, fittest and fastest athletes about. Get it wrong and things can go downhill and pretty quickly! I am lucky enough to work with a fab triathlon coach who helps me to manage my training programmes and balance the training intensities of the three sports – pushing me hard to help me progress, but also incorporating sufficient rest for me to recover, recoup and remain totally in love with what I do!

Beside from that my team includes a strength coach (I do 2-3 gym strength sessions a week and 1-2 pilates classes in addition to my key swim/bike/run training sessions) and a fab nutritionist who ensures I keep fuelling my fire! (And yes she LOVES Brynmor flapjacks as much as I do!)

Keeping my energy levels up!

With all this sporty stuff going on- keeping my energy up is a BIG thing. When training at the top levels everything counts- from the kit you wear, to the tyres on your bike, the intervals durations of those hill rep session and most essentially the nutrition that keep the machine (body!) firing on all cylinders and hitting the numbers! Sure, there is fuel that is essential- like the protein post sessions to help recover and the energy gels and drinks that keep those carbs topped up during high intensity work. But aside from all that- there is DEFINITELY a place for foods that are good for your soul. Brynmor has that in one! I have always loved flapjack- right from my days as a toddler steeling the mixing spoon from my mum in the kitchen and licking the bowl clean! (Somethings never change)!

My first bite of a Brynmor flapjack and it took me right back there! I love the fact that there are no nasties, no chemicals or artificial anything. Just wholesome, real food, all-natural deliciousness! I love the different flavours (at least one for every day of the week) and the protein options are also terrific for my snacks in-between sessions. I love them! As a treat during a long ride, as pud, as an energy top up after hard session days or just because! I am never disappointed!

Fun facts about me:

Who is your favourite sportsperson and why?

Michelle Vesterby – an incredible triathlete, mum that has come back to sport in total style! And she never ever stops smiling!

What is your favourite food?

Peanut butter!-Total addict… and pizza… and avocado… and ice cream… and yoghurt… Ok I just love food!!!

What film makes your cry?

NoteBook (I bet you’ve heard that one before!)

What is your fave Brynmor flapjack?

Pecan! First one I tried and it was love at first bite!
